Focus on Prostate Microultrasound: Fluciclovine and PSMA Gallium PET – Summary:

Ryan S. Hsi, MD, reviews findings from abstracts presented at the American Urological Association’s 2019 Annual Meeting on the use of high-resolution microultrasound in detecting prostate cancer. The research suggests that 18F-fluciclovine PET is most useful in patients with high PSA and can potentially guide lymph node dissection during surgery, while PSMA gallium PET appears to have promise for a number of scenarios, including the initial staging for high-risk disease, the early detection of biochemical recurrence, and radio-guided surgery for salvage lymph node dissection.

Ryan S. Hsi, MD, FACS

Ryan S. Hsi, MD, FACS, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Urology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He received his MD from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Loma Linda, California. He went on to receive post-graduate training at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, and at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Hsi’s clinical areas of interest include the medical and surgical management of kidney stone disease and minimally invasive urologic surgery for benign upper tract disease. Dr. Hsi’s research focus is in the epidemiology, treatment, and prevention of kidney stones.
