Summary

Mohit Khera, MD, MBA, MPH, F. Brantley Scott Chair in Urology, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, explains the concept of ‘sexspan,’ the period of life during which individuals maintain sexual function and intimacy. He presents evidence-based strategies to extend sexual wellness through lifestyle modification, partner engagement, and hormonal balance. He emphasizes that sexual health is a key determinant of overall well-being and directly correlates with lifespan and healthspan. Dr. Khera argues that sexual wellness is influenced by three interdependent pillars: partner health, lifestyle optimization, and hormonal balance.

Dr. Khera highlights that maintaining a healthy sexual partnership requires open communication, mutual respect, and emotional connection. Sexual health should be discussed without stigma, recognizing that intimacy is a critical aspect of quality of life. He presents data showing that couples who communicate effectively about sexual concerns experience higher satisfaction and better relationship outcomes.

He outlines key lifestyle factors that contribute to prolonged sexual function, including regular physical activity, balanced nutrition, quality sleep, and avoidance of tobacco and excessive alcohol. Dr. Khera underscores that metabolic and cardiovascular health directly affect erectile and hormonal function, making lifestyle modification a foundation for sexual longevity.

Addressing hormonal health, Dr. Khera explains the role of testosterone in maintaining libido, energy, and vitality in men. He discusses safe evaluation and management strategies for age-related hypogonadism, emphasizing individualized care and the importance of monitoring for risks and benefits. He underlines that optimizing sexual health through preventive care, lifestyle change, and open communication supports a longer, healthier, and more fulfilling life.
