Summary

Rahul D. Mehan, MD, Founder and CEO, East Valley Urology Center, Mesa, Arizona, explores how urologists can effectively use social media platforms to educate patients, share expertise, and address medical misinformation. Dr. Mehan explains that platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have become important sources of health information for patients, and how AI-driven discovery prioritizes relevant short-form content.

He explains why follower counts matter less than clarity, relevance, and engagement. Dr. Mehan reviews engagement data across platforms and describes how TikTok demonstrates particularly strong reach and user interaction. He emphasizes that educational content must align with platform culture and often requires an element of entertainment to sustain attention.

Dr. Mehan shares a four-step framework for creating effective short-form medical videos, focusing on early hooks, visual explanations, practical value, and clear conclusions. Examples from kidney stone prevention content illustrate how physician-generated videos can reach millions of viewers and directly address misinformation that does not align with American Urological Association recommendations.

He also addresses professional considerations, including institutional scrutiny and the importance of understanding local expectations. Dr. Mehan describes how social media has supported patient education, recruitment, and team culture within his practice. He encourages urologists to begin creating content with intention, professionalism, and awareness of context.
