HIFU for Prostate Cancer in Asia
Sunao Shoji, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Urology at Tokai University School of Medicine in Tokyo, Japan, discusses his institution’s study into using high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to treat localized prostate cancer in Asian men. Dr. Shoji describes his procedures for performing HIFU and discusses the results of the study, observing that target lesions were changed to fibrosis in all patients, but that significant prostate cancer was detected in the un-treated area in 8.9% of patients due to selection failures. After the presentation,Grand Rounds in Urology Associate Editor Peter K.F. Chiu, MD, PhD, FRCSEd, interviews Dr. Shoji on patient selection for HIFU, whole gland treatment with HIFU, preventing the retention of urine after HIFU, and erectile dysfunction after HIFU, among other topics.
