Prostate Cancer: Prevalence and Risk Factors – Summary
Anne E. Lizardi, DNP, RNFA, Medical Science Liason, Genitourinary Oncology Team, Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine, presents an overview of prostate cancer prevalence and associated risk factors. In this 4-minute presentation, she stresses that prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men globally. The five-year relative survival rate is nearly 98%, underscoring the benefit of earlier detection and improved therapies.
Historical trends show a sharp rise in diagnoses in the early 1990s, followed by a decline after changes in screening guidelines around 2011–2012. Rates are trending upward, with age being the most substantial risk factor.
Prostate cancer is common, particularly in older men. Major risk factors include age, family history, and genetics. Modifiable lifestyle behaviors may reduce risk, and early detection remains critical to improving outcomes.
