Community Dissemination of Bladder Health Research from the PLUS Consortium – Summary
Diane K. Newman, DNP, ANP-BC, FAAN, FAUNA, BCB-PMD, Adjunct Professor of Surgery, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, introduces Julia Maki, PhD, Supervisor, Public Health Research, Washington University School of Medicine, Saint Louis, Missouri. In this 15-minute presentation, Dr. Maki discusses the dissemination strategy for research summaries developed by the PLUS Consortium, a 10-year NIH/NIDDK-funded initiative focused on promoting bladder health and preventing lower urinary tract symptoms in women and adolescent girls.
The consortium’s central mission is to develop an evidence base for future interventions. Community engagement is integral, with over 100 rapid assessment partners and a 10-member Community Partnership Council offering cultural and methodological input throughout the study. Dr. Maki stresses the importance of bidirectional engagement, where community members not only inform research but also benefit from findings. To this end, the team created 33 common language summaries that provide key findings, methods, and implications, enabling broader public access to scientific knowledge. The summaries are compiled into a downloadable report and hosted online for public and clinical use. Dr. Maki encourages researchers to adopt similar practices to enhance accessibility.
