Summary:

Vahan Kassabian, MD, Director of the Atlanta Prostate Center and Advanced Therapeutics at Advanced Urology in Atlanta, Georgia, presents a case study to illustrate the benefits of treating certain prostate cancer patients using high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) instead of radical prostatectomy and radiation therapy. He begins by reviewing the circumstances of the patient’s diseases in 2015, then summarizes treatment and followup from early 2016 through January 2021. Finally, he explains how HIFU has been beneficial for the patient so far and what options are available at this point in their still-evolving journey.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dr. Vahan Kassabian is the Director of the Atlanta Prostate Center and Advanced Therapeutics at the Advanced Urology Institute of Georgia. A nationally recognized surgeon and pioneer in HIFU for localized prostate cancer, he is considered a key opinion leader, advisor, and consultant for treatments in prostate cancer.

Dr. Kassabian earned his medical degree from University of Montreal, Quebec, then completed his urologic residency at the University of Montreal. He pursued further training as a research fellow in urologic oncology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, where he served as a clinical instructor of urologic oncology. He then transitioned to Assistant Professor of Surgery at Emory University, where he was awarded “Teacher of the Year” for his role in the advancement of education. He has also served as Chief of Urology at the VA Hospital in Atlanta.

Some of Dr. Kassabian’s former notable appointments include Medical Director of Georgia Urology, P.A., and member of the Cancer Committee, Peer Review Committee, and Contractor Advisory Committee of CAHABA. He currently serves as the Urology Consultant for Palmetto, the regional Medicare carrier, Contributing Editor for the publication “Reviews in Urology”, and is a reviewer for “Urology Practice.”

Voted one of Atlanta Magazine’s Top Doctors in 2018, he has extensive experience in clinical research and participated in numerous national and international presentations, publications, and book chapters.
