Prostate Cancer in the Veteran Population Roundtable – Summary
In this 40-minute discussion, a panel of experts discusses the urgent need to improve prostate cancer care for veterans, highlighting this population’s higher risk and challenges in accessing care.
Mike Crosby, Veterans Prostate Cancer Awareness, a prostate cancer survivor and advocate, shares his diagnosis experience in 2015. Prostate cancer remains the most diagnosed cancer in the VA system. Crosby advocates for improved screening protocols, emphasizing that current guidelines delay PSA screening until age 55, missing younger veterans at higher risk. He urges medical professionals to ask patients about their military history to identify those needing earlier screening. Crosby stresses the need for better access to biomarkers, which are critical for accurate prostate cancer staging but remain underutilized due to budget constraints and administrative hurdles. Mental health support is also emphasized. Crosby urges providers to integrate mental health referrals when delivering a cancer diagnosis.
The presentation is a thorough and comprehensive conversation between a Veteran advocate and medical experts dedicated to serving this population.
