Competing Risks for Small Renal Masses – Summary

Jeremy Slawin, MD, emphasizes the need for a nuanced approach to managing small renal masses (SRMs) – tumors less than 4 cm – given the potential for both overtreatment and undertreatment. Dr. Slawin elaborates on the criteria for selecting management options, considering patient age, comorbidities, tumor characteristics, and patient preferences.

Active surveillance is presented as a viable option for select patients, particularly the elderly or those with significant comorbidities, where the risks of intervention may outweigh the benefits. For patients suitable for intervention, Dr. Slawin compares partial nephrectomy and ablative techniques such as radiofrequency ablation and cryoablation.

Dr. Slawin also addresses the role of emerging technologies and biomarkers in improving risk stratification and decision-making for SRMs. He discusses the potential of genetic and molecular profiling to better predict tumor behavior and guide personalized treatment plans.

About The 27th Annual Innovations in Urologic Practice:

Presented by co-chairs Mohit Khera, MD, MBA, MPH, and Michael Coburn, MD, FACS, the Innovations in Urologic Practice conference provides a detailed review and commentary on multiple genitourinary and urologic diseases. Among the featured oncological topics are bladder cancer and immunotherapies, as well as upper tract cancer management, prostate cancer, including state-of-the-art imaging, focal therapy, and MRI. Experts also discuss new tools and techniques for nephrectomy and treating advanced renal cell carcinoma. In terms of general urological approaches, the conference also includes pelvic reconstruction and trauma; men’s health topics like male infertility, andrology, and sexual dysfunction; OAB and voiding dysfunctions; and ways to diagnose and treat infections in the urology patient.
