Focal Brachytherapy for Prostate Cancer – Summary

Bruno Nahar, MD, an associate professor of urologic oncology at the University of Miami, delivers a presentation on the emerging role of focal therapy in prostate cancer management. In this 11-minute talk, he emphasizes the importance of risk stratification in tailoring personalized treatment plans, highlighting active surveillance as a preferred strategy for low-risk, low-volume cancer, and whole-gland treatment for intermediate- and high-risk cases.

Dr. Nahar introduces focal therapy as a promising middle ground treatment, targeting clinically significant “index lesions.” He presents data from recent studies demonstrating focal therapy’s effectiveness compared to whole-gland approaches.

While noting the lack of long-term data and standardization in patient selection and follow-up protocols, Dr. Nahar advocates for further advancements in imaging and multi-institutional collaboration to enhance treatment success and refine eligibility criteria.

The Global Summit on Precision Diagnosis and Treatment of Prostate Cancer is a unique multi-disciplinary forum organized to inform the key health care stakeholders about the emerging advances in clinical case and research and create a consensus-based vision for the future of precision care and educational and research strategy for its realization. The mission of the Summit is to fill the currently existing gap between the key experts of in vivo imaging, the world authorities in the in vitro fluid- and tissue-based molecular diagnostics, including genomics, and thought leaders in the development of novel observation strategies (e.g., active surveillance, or AS) and therapeutic interventions.
