Optimizing Care for Pelvic Floor Disorders Among Minority Women
– Summary

Katherine Amin, MD, focuses on optimizing care for pelvic floor disorders among minority women. In this 12-minute presentation, Dr. Amin addresses disparities in treatment and access.

Research highlights that pelvic floor disorders are highly prevalent, yet minority populations, particularly Hispanic and Black women, are significantly less likely to seek care or receive treatment. Studies indicate that minority women experience similar or even greater symptom severity but remain undertreated due to systemic barriers and a lack of awareness about available interventions. Dr. Amin shares findings that trust in physicians, language barriers, and cultural influences play a significant role in decision-making.

Mobile healthcare clinics at the University of Miami offer a promising solution by improving access and educating communities about pelvic floor disorders and treatment options. A patient-centered, community-engaged approach is a key strategy for reducing disparities and improving outcomes.
