Penile Filling with Hyaluronic Acid – Where are We – Summary

Fernando Tardelli, MD, explores the controversial field of penile enlargement. In this 18-minute presentation, Dr. Tardelli discusses using hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers as a minimally invasive approach.

Dr. Tardelli begins with a historical perspective, highlighting the longstanding cultural and psychological significance of penile size. The talk differentiates between patients with true micropenis, those with perceived small penis syndrome, and those with body dysmorphic disorder, emphasizing the necessity of psychological evaluation before considering any intervention.

Hyaluronic acid fillers have emerged as a safe and reversible option for penile augmentation. Unlike permanent fillers such as PMMA, which have been banned in certain countries due to complications, HA offers biocompatibility, low risk, and reversibility through enzymatic degradation. Clinical studies demonstrate significant increases in penile girth with high patient satisfaction, even as the filler gradually resorbs over time. Adverse effects are minimal, primarily minor irregularities, edema, and occasional infections.

Dr. Tardelli underscores the importance of urologists leading this field rather than leaving it to non-specialists. Data from over 8,000 cases show promising outcomes with HA, particularly for patients with penile implants or post-surgical irregularities. Dr. Tardelli emphasizes the need for further multicenter clinical trials to refine techniques and establish long-term efficacy.
