Scott M. Weissman, MS, CGC, outlines how the recent boom in genetic testing for prostate cancer has not been met by an equivalent increase in access to genetic counseling. He describes the differences between the shortage of counselors and inefficiencies in access, challenges with insurance coverage for germline testing, and currently available solutions for doctors and patients to get in touch with a counselor.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Scott M. Weissman, MS, LCGC, graduated from Northwestern University with his MS in Genetic Counseling in 2002. He practiced clinically at NorthShore University HealthSystem for 12 years and was the Program Manager at the Center for Medical Genetics. He then worked as a Customer Service Genetic Counselor for GeneDx for 3 years. In 2016, he opened a private genetic counseling practice called Chicago Genetic Consultants, LLC. In addition to this, he joined Genome Medical as a Lead Counselor for Cancer and Proactive Health Services in 2018. Mr. Weissman is currently a clinical faculty member in the Northwestern University Program. He has been an active member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) where he has worked on a variety of committees and held positions as the Co-Chair of the Familial Cancer Risk Special Interest Group and Liaison to both the Commission on Cancer and the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, two programs housed in the American College of Surgeons. In 2012, he was honored with the Strategic Leader Award from the National Society of Genetic Counselors, and in 2019 he joined the Board of Directors as the Secretary/Treasurer.
