The New Frontier of Overactive Bladder Treatments – Summary

Katherine Amin, MD, provides a comprehensive overview of overactive bladder, discussing its pathophysiology, prevalence, economic burden, and evolving treatment strategies. In this 21-minute presentation, Dr. Amin emphasizes the importance of patient-centered care, moving away from rigid treatment hierarchies to shared decision-making.

Dr. Amin discusses non-invasive approaches including lifestyle modifications such as reducing caffeine and managing fluid intake, weight loss, and pelvic floor physical therapy. Pharmacologic treatments include antimuscarinics and beta-3 agonists. Minimally invasive therapies, including sacral neuromodulation and percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation, offer durable alternatives with high success rates.

Dr. Amin underscores the need for early intervention with durable therapies, highlighting the role of urologists in driving innovation and expanding access to advanced treatment modalities.
