Enhancing Your Productivity Using Disposable Cystoscopes – Summary
Grand Rounds in Urology Contributing Editor Neil H. Baum, MD, Professor of Urology at Tulane Medical School, discusses the use of disposable cystoscopes to improve physician productivity. He explains that in the current economic climate, with decreasing reimbursements and increasing overhead, it behooves physicians to increase their productivity and efficiency. One way of achieving higher efficiency is by utilizing disposable instruments which offer greater flexibility when performing procedures. Dr. Baum describes the benefits of disposable cystoscopes: They are portable; arrive already sterilized; have a short set-up time; and require no pre-processing. Additionally, when compared with cystoscopy in an ambulatory surgical center, an in-office procedure has a shorter turnaround time of roughly five minutes versus 30-45 minutes and is reimbursed at a higher overall rate after accounting for the added expense of using an ambulatory surgical center. In-office cystoscopy also allows the physician greater scheduling control without hiring additional staff or added expenses, while also freeing up time to see more patients per hour. Lastly, patients prefer being seen in the office and appreciate a local anesthetic over general anesthesia as they are able to drive following the procedure. Dr. Baum summarizes that disposable cystoscopes can increase net income by decreasing expenses and facilitating a quicker, more patient-friendly procedure.
