Adjuvant Treatment for Recurrent Urethral Strictures: Optilume Drug-Coated Balloon (DCB) – Summary

Salvatore Micali, MD, discusses the treatment of recurrent anterior urethral strictures using the Optilume drug-coated balloon. Dr. Micali provides a brief overview of urethral strictures, emphasizing anterior urethral strictures, their causes and recurrence, and their impact on patient QoL.

Dr. Micali touches on the two best-known treatments for urethral strictures, endoscopic urethrectomy by the Sachse method and urethroplasty. He notes that recurrence of urethral strictures is less likely in patients who underwent urethroplasty, but that patients prefer the minimally-invasive endoscopic urethrectomy.

To combat recurrent anterior urethral strictures, Dr. Micali examines the Optilum drug-coated balloon (DCB) in combination with endoscopic urethrectomy. He explains the advantages of using an anti-proliferative drug-coated balloon to dilate the urethra after an endoscopic urethrectomy in order to prevent recurrent strictures.

Dr. Mical concludes by guiding the audience through a study comparing patients treated with the Optilum DCB versus patients treated with only an endoscopic urethrectomy over one year. He includes video demonstrations of the Optilume DCB operation.

Salvatore Micali, MD

Salvatore Micali, MD, is Associate Professor of Urology at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in Modena, Italy. Dr. Micali has focused his career on advancing surgical care of urological patients. His major areas of interest are endourology, minimally invasive surgery for treatment of renal and ureteral stones, and oncology. Dr. Micali is an investigator of several studies on urology and surgical techniques, has more than 100 publications in the Journal of Urology and European Urology among others, as well as contributed chapters in several key medical texts such as Smith’s Textbook of Endourology (Wiley-Blackwell, 2016). Since 2013, he has been a section editor for BMC Urology (BioMed Central Ltd) and associate editor for many other urological journals. Dr. Micali is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Urological Association and the European Urological Association, and he is a member of the executive and scientific board of the Italian Association of Endourology. Dr. Micali has performed more than 3000 urological surgical procedures as first operator, and he has given 142 invited presentations at national and international congresses and courses. Starting in 2015, Dr. Micali has been a visiting professor in the Department of Urology at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine at the Hofstra University of New York.
