In-Office Water Vapor Ablation – Summary

Arvin K. George, MD, Assistant Professor of Urology at the University of Michigan in Midland, Michigan, provides insights into the Rezum procedure, an in-office treatment for symptomatic  benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Using radio frequency power, the procedure generates vapor through an inductive heating coil, resulting in convective vapor ablation. Dr. George explores the indications for Rezum, which includes symptomatic BPH in men above 50 years with gland volumes of 30 to 80 ccs. However, expanding indications for larger glands have shown promising outcomes. He highlights the reduction in IPSS score, improvement in quality of life, and preservation of sexual function observed in clinical studies. While emphasizing the advantages of the procedure, such as its convenience, minimal learning curve, and low retreatment rate, Dr. George also discusses the limitations, including the need for additional data on larger glands and the requirement of a catheter. Overall, the Rezum procedure provides a viable office-based option with satisfactory results for many patients with symptomatic BPH.

The annual symposium on Frontiers in Oncologic Prostate Care and Ablative Local Therapy (FOCAL) is an outstanding program on prostate imaging, transperineal interventions, and ablative treatments for prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia. Bringing together community-based, academic, and industry partners, FOCAL offers lectures by world-renowned faculty and hands-on training workshops on in-office transperineal interventions, fusion-guided prostate ablation and state-of-the-art BPH management with novel technologies.
